Santa Clarita, Calif., June 11, 2013 – Animal Behavior College (ABC) will host its first Dog Trainer Classroom Program commencement ceremony on Monday, June 17, 2013, at 10:00 a.m. at the school headquarters at Mann Biomedical Park in Santa Clarita.

ABC president and founder, Steven Appelbaum, will give the commencement speech and present diplomas to the five graduating students: Erika Contant, Rose Ferguson Chris Gant, Nikole Iudica, and Diana Mogensen. Beth Harrison, class instructor, will honor each of the graduates by speaking about their growth, knowledge and experiences with the ABC dog training certification program.

Founded in 1998, ABC is the largest animal career vocational school of its kind in North America and incorporates a unique distance-learning, hands-on externship training model. The school offers courses for certified dog training, pet grooming and veterinary assistants in all 50 states and every Canadian province.

With this new local program option, students can choose to take the certified dog training class in a personal classroom setting full-time, and complete the program in approximately 5 months. The curriculum consists of 850 hours of written, verbal and video instruction. Additionally, the course includes 60 hours of outside classroom time at local shelters where the students work directly with homeless dogs to help them become better candidates for adoption. The students study how dogs learn, how to teach basic obedience cues, effective problem solving, safety and how to build a business. After graduation, the ABC Alumni Program provides lifetime benefits, including job and business-building assistance.

ABC is committed to helping its military students with tuition assistance and funding is available for qualified military families. The Dog Trainer Classroom Program is approved for the training of veterans and eligible persons under the provisions of title 38, United States Code. Four of the five ABC graduating students are military veterans.

“For our hands-on training component of the course, the students volunteered at the Best Friends Animal Society for three months to provide attention, training and enrichment to the dogs to help them become better candidates for adoption and find forever homes,” said Beth Harrison. “The course has been a win-win for the animals as well as our students! In fact, two of our students have applied for jobs at Best Friends. And another student, upon her graduation, has three private clients set up for training.”

The next Dog Trainer Classroom Program is scheduled to start on June 24, 2013 and graduation will be November 22, 2013.
