Santa Clarita, Calif., November 6, 2014 — They are man’s best friend and a soldier’s trusted comrade. In observance of Veteran’s Day, Animal Behavior College (ABC) has created a video tribute honoring military working dogs, also known as war dogs, for their allegiance, devotion and loyalty to those they serve. These canine champions and their handlers sacrifice much for freedom, sometime paying with their lives.

The video, ABC’s Canine Champions of Freedom who Sacrifice for All, salutes four military working dogs for their bravery and service. Throughout history, war dogs have worked side-by-side with soldiers during combat in several capacities, including guarding, scouting, recovering, tracking and detecting. With noses so keen—they are 100,000 times more sensitive than humans’ and their uncanny ability for detection—these canine warriors have saved a countless number of soldiers’ lives.

There are currently more than 2,500 military working dogs worldwide, according to the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges.
